So, how to learn “Don’t move” to his dog? By following our advice and our method to the letter! Quite simply.
Why learn “Don’t move” to your dog
Teaching your dog to “Don’t move” is important and will allow you to be more serene in many situations.
We see a lot of dogs tied up in front of a bakery or a grocery store. This is not the best solution. Indeed, a dog attached in these conditions can quickly be aggressive if someone approaches.
By teaching him “Don’t move”, you will not need to tie him when you buy your bread. You’ll even have time to chat with the baker!
As a precaution, you can attach it, but only once you have ordered it to stay put. He will not take it as a punishment and will not even realize that he is tied up with his leash.
This order also allows you to wait patiently for a place like in your cart, in the car when you open the door, in the street before crossing and so on. The dog will calmly wait for your return or authorization to move and that is really the best for a master!
Preparations before the training session
Remember that learning to move to your dog should be done after sitting and bedtime training. For this, I recommend this effective method:
Once these orders are acquired, make lots of treats to reward your dog. You must always have some to wear.
The key to teaching your dog how to stay is to find the right place for the session. Whatever order you want to teach your dog, know that it must always be done in a place without distraction at the beginning. Avoid the outdoors during the first sessions. This is a place where there are too many temptations for your dog to focus on you and your order. So start at home.
Choose the word you will use for the order. The best known is of course “not moving”, but some prefer to say “stay here” for example. Whatever word you choose, you must keep it and never change it. If people around you do activities with your pet, they should also use the same word as you. It’s really important especially when learning.
The method to teach your dog “Don’t move”
The treats are in your hand and you are in a quiet place? It’s perfect, so you can start the training session.
To begin, you must sit down or lie down your dog. Whether it is one or the other does not matter. Step back very slowly, putting yourself in front of your dog and with your hand in front of you, the palm facing the dog. When backing up, give him the order “Don’t move”.
The first few times, he will get up and that’s normal. If this is the case, and it certainly will, tell him “NO” dryly and gently put your dog back to its original place. Back off again.
At first, back off only a few steps. If he does “Don’t move”, come back to him and congratulate him warmly by giving him a treat and caressing him.
Repeat the exercise several times in the same session.
Increase the difficulty
Increase the distance between him and you and reduce the rewards, but keep the congratulations and the caresses.
When you think your dog is ready, step back further and disappear. Go to another room. He should “Don’t move”. If so, congratulations, you have successfully completed your training. Do not forget to always come back to him and fondle him. He must never feel abandoned.
Our tip: to make sure your dog understands the “Don’t move” order, have a session with a friend or family member. You order your dog “Don’t move” and the other person must “annoy” your dog. She can push him a little, call him briefly excited. If your dog does “Don’t move”, it’s won! You can be sure that if you leave it in front of a store for a few minutes, nothing will disturb it and it will always be in your mind “Don’t move”!
We give you some extra tips so that you put the odds on your side to succeed in training a dog to move.
Do not forget that your dog will not stay without moving for hours. Tell him when he can move with the same word: “come on”, “come”, “go” and so on.
Vary the situations. Once the order is acquired, vary the situations at the beginning. For example, you can ask him “Don’t move” from his basket when you get in the crowd, when you walk in your front door, when you talk to someone, and so on.
To make learning easier, we advise you to do the session before the dog’s meal. Put your dog in his basket and ask him “Don’t move”. Fill his bowl and wait a little before ordering him to eat. Wait every day a little more. Having a meal as a reward will motivate him, that’s for sure!
How to learn “Don’t move” to your dog is certainly not the easiest order, but it is the one that will allow you to move a lot more with your pet. A dog always wants to follow his master anywhere and anytime. Hence the difficulty of learning this order.
But with patience, some treats and many sessions, you’ll get there, we’re sure! Make sure the sessions are not so long 15 minutes is enough.
